The Gospel of Mary
Papyrus Oxyrhynchus 3525

The following translation is based on the reconstructed Greek text printed in volume 50 of The Oxyrhynchus Papyri.

. . . weeping greatly and saying, "How should we go to the nations preaching the gospel of the kingdom of the son of man? For if they did not spare him, how will they spare us?"

Then Mary stood up and kissed them all, saying to the brothers, "Do not weep nor grieve nor doubt. For his grace is with you, protecting you greatly. Let us bless his great name because he has united us and made us human." Speaking this way, Mary turned their minds to the good and they began to seek the meaning of the savior's sayings.

Peter said to Mary, "Sister, we know that you were more greatly esteemed by the savior than other women. So tell us . . . words of the savior which we did not hear."

Mary continued, saying, "Whatever escaped you and I remember I will proclaim to you." And she began to speak these words to them, "Before when I was seeing the Lord in a vision, I was saying, 'Lord, today . . .

Papyrus Rylands 463

The following translation is based on the Greek text printed in Volume 3 of C.H. Roberts' Catalogue of the Greek and Latin Papyri in the John Rylands Library.

. . . the remainder of the course of the season of time of the age rest in silence. After Mary had said these things she fell silent because this was as far as the savior had spoken.

Andrew said, "Brothers, what do you think about the things that have been said. For I do not believe the savior has said these things. For it seems to be different than his thought about these matters. When the savior was questioned, did he speak in secret to a woman and not openly that we all might hear? . . . more worthy than us . . .

. . . the savior. Levi said to Peter, "Peter, a quick temper is always present with you. And just now you were discussing with the woman as though she were your enemy. If the savior considered her worthy, who are you to disdain her totally. For knowing her completely, he loved her greatly. Let us be ashamed and, putting on the perfect man let us do that which was commanded of us, to proclaim the gospel, neither being angry nor prescribing laws because these are the things the savior said." After Levi had spoken, he departed and began to proclaim the gospel . . .
